Description
An absolutely stunning mid-century modern sculpted lounge chair of strikingly remarkable form, exceptional construction and style, designed by Bruno Mathsson in the 1960’s in Varnamo Sweden and manufactured by Firma Karl Mathsson. Features curved arm supports resting over bentwood legs and frame and is crafted of beechwood. The chair is designed for comfort with an angled back offering superior comfort and support, covered in original webbing in excellent vintage condition. The design of this chair is from 1942, however this particular example is from the 1960s. This chair retains its original seal stamped on underside (Firma Karl Mathsson made Varnamo-Sweden 1961). You will notice Mathsson’s dual influence of functionalism and modernism, with a nod to old Swedish crafts tradition. A distinctly organic form particularly striking is the side profile with beautiful sculpting of the hardwood arms and legs, giving an attractive angularity appearance. This chair will truly be a showpiece in your collection; whether you are a collector of the Swedish functionalist movement, or just a fan of the finest mid-century modern furniture.
Condition Report: Very sturdy, strong and comfortable, upholstery in overall “excellent” condition with very minor wear.
Bruno Mathsson (January 13, 1907 – August 17, 1988) was a Swedish furniture designer, cabinetmaker, architect. He was a son of a carpenter and worked in his father’s gallery in the town of Varnamo in the South of Sweden. He designed furniture with Swedish craft, tradition, modernism and functionalism. He was perfectionist and an experimenter, who constantly searched for improvements in materials and form, and styles of making furniture. Mathsson was one of the first Scandinavians to grasp biomorphic forms in furniture, with incredibly flowing bent beechwood frames, making them some of the most instantly recognizable works of 20th-century. He is said to have based the contours of his chairs on the impression a body makes when in a snow bank. He used generous graceful woven webbing for seats. Bruno Mathsson was a creator who designed with extraordinary flexibility.
