Extra Notes: contemporary appeal, great quality and decorative item, brass is an alloy made of copper and zinc; the proportions of zinc and copper can be varied to create a range of brasses with varying properties, and different colour tonalities. It was originally used for decoration for its bright gold-like appearance, reflecting light in the dark houses of the time. During the later part of first millennium BC the use of brass spread across a wide geographical area from Britain and Spain in the West to Iran and India in the East. By the first century BC brass was available in sufficient supply to use as coinage in Phrygia. Brass continued to be made and technically developed under Medieval and renaissance times
