Description

A remarkable pair of Antique Korean Elm small chests, with original brass hardware, circa late 19th Century. Featuring richly grained wood, beautifully engraved brass hardware and lovely adornments. Framed by brass corner accents and round, studded brass detailing are “nature inspired” elements and symbolism characteristic of Korean design. Two decorative handles feature plates that appear to represent butterflies or beetles, and a Koi fish playfully swims at the bottom. Elaborate brass “butterfly” lock plates and hinges release a drop-down upper door to reveal two small side drawers, one larger center drawer and storage space for personal affairs and items. Standing on elegantly curved feet adjoined front to back by wooden strips, these chests feature a solid base with gracefully carved scalloped aprons. Joined corners and dovetailing technique on the tops add to their decorative appeal and age. Extraordinary and unique, these chests will beautifully border a sofa as side tables, serve as nightstands or individually add an interesting element of worldly charm and style to any setting! nCondition Report: Sturdy bases; beautiful patina to brass hardware, hinges operate smoothly; drawers slide evenly; brass detailing and accents pristine; minor flaws and scratches to wood consistent with age, wear. n nPlace of Origin: Korea nPeriod: Late 19th Century nMaterials and Techniques: Elm wood, brass nCondition: Good nCondition Details: Wear consistent with age and use nMeasurements: 17” H x 10” D x 17” L n n n n n n n n
